How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

October 10th, 2025

1. Use a Ring You Already Own

If you already have a ring that fits the intended finger perfectly, this is the easiest method.

Here’s how:

  • Place the ring on a ruler and measure the inside diameter in millimeters.

  • Use a ring size chart (readily available online) to match your measurement to the correct size.

    • For example:

      • 16.5mm = Size 6

      • 17.3mm = Size 7

      • 18.2mm = Size 8

Pro tip: Make sure you’re measuring the inside of the ring, not the outer edges — that’s where small mistakes can happen.

2. Try the String (or Paper) Method

This method takes just a few minutes and works surprisingly well.

What you’ll need:

  • A piece of string or a thin strip of paper

  • A ruler

  • A pen

Here’s how:

  1. Wrap the string or paper around the base of your finger.

  2. Mark where it overlaps.

  3. Lay it flat and measure the length in millimeters.

  4. Compare your measurement to a ring size conversion chart.

Example:

  • 51.5mm = Size 6

  • 54.5mm = Size 7

  • 57.0mm = Size 8

Tip: Measure your finger at the end of the day when it’s at its largest. Avoid measuring when your hands are cold, as your fingers may be slightly smaller.

3. Use a Printable Ring Sizer

Many jewelers (including us!) offer printable ring sizer guides online. You can print one at home, making sure the scale is accurate, and use it to measure either your finger or an existing ring.

Bonus: This method tends to be more precise than the string method, especially if you print on thicker paper or cardstock.

4. Order a Plastic Ring Sizer

If you want to be extra sure, you can order an inexpensive ring sizer tool online. It’s a small adjustable measuring strip that works just like a belt and gives an exact reading of your ring size.

This is also a great option if you plan to buy multiple rings in the future or often gift jewelry.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • Your dominant hand may be slightly larger. Always measure the exact finger you plan to wear the ring on.

  • Temperature and time of day matter. Fingers swell and shrink — mid-day measurements tend to be most accurate.

  • Comfort is key. Your ring should slide on easily and come off with a little resistance.
