How to Care for Your Luxury Watch in Summer Heat | W. Kodak Jewelers
June 18th, 2025
As temperatures rise and beach days become the norm, your luxury watch deserves a little extra attention. Whether you’re poolside in Palm Beach or on the move in Hoboken, summer heat and humidity can impact the performance and longevity of your timepiece. Here’s how to keep it looking sharp and ticking flawlessly all season long.
1. Watch Out for Water (Even if It’s Water-Resistant)
Not all water-resistant watches are created equal. While many modern luxury timepieces can handle splashes or even a swim, prolonged exposure to saltwater or chlorinated pools can be harmful — especially to leather straps. Always double-check your watch's water resistance rating and avoid hot tubs or saunas, as high heat can compromise seals.
2. Keep It Cool (Literally)
Extreme temperatures can affect the lubricants inside your watch movement. Try to avoid leaving your watch in direct sunlight for extended periods — like on a car dashboard or a beach towel. This can cause components to expand, affecting timekeeping accuracy or even damaging the case and dial.
3. Give Your Strap Some Love
Summer sweat and humidity can wear out straps faster — particularly leather. Consider switching to a rubber, NATO, or metal bracelet during the warmer months. They’re more breathable and easier to clean. If you prefer to stick with leather, be sure to wipe it down regularly with a soft cloth.
4. Rinse After a Dip
If you do wear your watch in the ocean or a pool, gently rinse it with fresh water afterward. Salt and chlorine can cause corrosion over time, even on stainless steel or ceramic cases.
5. Stick to a Service Schedule
Summer is a great time to check in on your watch's overall condition. If it's been a few years since your last service, stop by one of our boutiques for a quick evaluation. Our watchmakers can ensure your seals are intact and everything’s running smoothly.
6. Store It Smart
When not wearing your watch, store it in a cool, dry place — ideally in its box or a watch case. Avoid humid environments like bathrooms or sun-soaked windowsills.
